ABOUT THE SHOW:

At the historic Brown Homestead, where time seems to slow to a jazz tempo, Denielle Bassels will cast her musical spell over a sun-drenched afternoon picnic. Beneath the azure sky, and underneath a billowing canopy, guests will gather to dine and dance as the sun plays hide-and-seek through the leaves. Caught in the timeless embrace of music and nature, Denielle and her band will create an afternoon symphony of serenity and joy. Every instant will blossom into a treasured, timeless tune.

Please note: Seating is provided.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Denielle Bassels

Toronto-born jazz vocalist and songwriter Denielle Bassels’ career in music began working as an au-pair in Lausanne, Switzer- land. She started singing in clubs to earn extra money to extend her stay and incidentally found herself performing with some of the country’s top jazz musicians. “We’d set up unannounced at a restaurant and begin playing, and if the patrons liked the music we would be allowed to stay. We always stayed!” She performed across Switzerland and France at jazz caves and festivals for two years before returning home to Canada to pursue a deeper education in music and received her Bachelors of Music from Humber College in Toronto. In 2017 she released her debut full-length album of eleven originals“What About Wool Wishbags”, reaching #1 on the iTunes Jazz charts in Canada. Seven of these originals received international awards, including a grand prize in the “International John Lennon Songwriting Competition” for her song “Cool Cool Water”. In 2018 she was a featured vocalist on the studio album “Muse” by Jaymz Bee’s The Tiki Collective, which debuted her original song “Wanderer” alongside performances by Lily Frost, Joanna Mojoko, and The Willows. In June 2023, Bassels released her 2nd full-length original Album “Little Bit a’ Love” to rave reviews and was nominated in 2024 for a June for “Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year”. She is currently getting ready to release her newest album for 2024 funded by FACTOR Canada.

PRAISE/QUOTES:

“Bassels has a winning combination here: a strong, clear voice, great stage presence, along with a tight rhythm section, forceful gypsy-jazz-influenced guitar, and expressive clarinet and tenor sax.” Brett Delmage, ottawajazzscene.ca

“There is something about the imaginative way in which Denielle thinks, crafts and creates music that is undeniably her own. What About Wool Wishbags is a remarkable collection of songs that brings together the past and the future with strong songwriting structures that still leave room for all sorts of adventure. 2017 has been blessed.” -Dani Elwell, JAZZ FM 91.1

For her performance, Denielle will be joined by Glenn Anderson on Drums, Eric St. Laurent on Guitar, Rob Lee on Upright Bass, and  Aline Homzy on Violin.
