ABOUT THE SHOW:
JUNO Nominated vocalist Alex Pangman is delighted to have been invited to take part of the anniversary celebration of the 10th annual TD Niagara Jazz Festival this year, and to bring her Alleycats back to the Niagara Region. Get ready to enjoy upbeat swing music from the 1920s and 30s, beautiful ballads, sentimental favourites and some vintage gems you won’t have heard before, but may just find yourself dancing too!
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
JUNO Nominated jazz vocalist Alex Pangman has an instantly recognizable voice on the airwaves. Known as Canada’s Sweetheart of Swing, she’s a little bit old-time, a little bit sassy and a little bit romantic. Having established herself as a vintage song stylist over the course of many albums for Montreal’s Justin Time Records, she leads listeners through the sparkling music of the 1920s and 30s with a voice that has facets of a young Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and the Boswell Sisters. She has toured across Canada, and played in the States and abroad, opening for Willie Nelson, performing with John and Bucky Pizzarelli, recording in New Orleans, and more! She is host of Swing Set on JAZZFM91.1 and is also an advocate for organ transplant.
Although Alex Pangman grew up a couple of generations late to have sung with Benny Goodman, the vibrant young vocalist is proud to be known as Canada’s Sweetheart of Swing. With pipes aplenty, Pangman possesses the requisite taste, talent and the historical knowledge of an avid record collector to breathe new life into the music of the classic jazz era. A superb song stylist, Pangman has built a loyal fanbase through her acclaimed work with her stacked Alleycats. Established in 1999, this curated group of tradsters play vintage music with affection, a killer groove, and skill. USA Today wrote that they are “ebullient…Pangman and Her Alleycats party like it’s 1933.” Having honed their craft in the speakeasy atmosphere of the Reservoir Lounge in Toronto, the band truly inhabit and inject life into this era of music. It’s sure to be a fun and swinging affair when Pangman takes the stage with Grammy nominated violinist Drew Jurecka on board, backed by the rhythm section which includes Peter Hill on piano, Glenn Anderson on drums, and Chris Banks on bass. So for Pangman, what begins as a teenage obsession with Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden and The Boswell Sisters, turned into a career that has seen the Alleycats play all the major Jazz Festivals in Canada, performance with music legendary, record several studio albums, earn a JUNO nomination, and appear in America and abroad.
