ABOUT THE SHOW
Dr. Brice Miller presents the Mahogany Baby Dolls: Just a few decades ago, the baby doll tradition of New Orleans’ black neighborhoods seemed destined to fade. Only a handful of women celebrated Carnival Day in the signature satin dresses and baby bonnets. The tradition, which finds its origins around 1912 in the underbelly of New Orleansβ Storyville District, like many cultural traditions has morphed from a negative to a positive. Dr. Miller will interviews members of the Mahogany Baby Dolls, an ensemble of professional ladies who now carry the torch for the modern tradition, one that has become family-centric and respected in the community. The ladies will also discuss their colorful handmade outfits, show us some dancing routines, and share a few insights about this uniquely New Orleans tradition.
