Celebrating the Women Lyricists and Librettists of the Golden Era, in song
Women’s Lib honours the women who wrote the songs that helped define the 20th century. These lyricists and librettists shaped Broadway, Hollywood, jazz, and the Great American Songbook while often working behind the scenes. Their writing brought wit, resilience, romance, independence, and emotional honesty to popular music, with lyrics that were ahead of their time. The program features works by writers such as Dorothy Fields, Irene Higginbotham, and Ruth Lowe, and more.
On International Women’s Day, March 8, acclaimed vocalist Genevieve Marentette, known as Gigi, brings these songs to life through performance and storytelling. With warmth and insight, she shines a light on the women behind enduring songs such as The Way You Look Tonight, Good Morning Heartache, I’ll Never Smile Again, Just for a Thrill, and much more, inviting audiences to listen beyond the melody and discover the authors who shaped the music.intimate evening of voice and guitar. Genevieve “Gigi” Marentette is a Canadian vocalist from Leamington, Ontario, raised in a home steeped in music and activism, who began performing professionally at age five under the influence of her musician-activist mother. Trained at Walkerville Centre for the Creative Arts and Humber College, she came of age performing between Windsor and Detroit, collaborating with jazz and electronic innovators, and later spent eight years touring Asia and Europe, developing her signature blend of jazz, blues, Brazilian, global, and electronic music. Since returning to Toronto in 2014, she has become one of the city’s most celebrated singers and a co-founder of the Kensington Market Jazz Festival, releasing acclaimed projects including The Heart of 21, Live & Improvised, and Songs of ’69 Volume I. Widely praised for her fearless artistry, magnetic stage presence, and rare interpretive depth, Gigi continues to captivate audiences across genres and generations.
