WHO IS ASTRUD?
Alongside the creators of the bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, known as the âQueen of Bossa Nova”, Â helped to put the spotlight on 1960âs Brazilian music and culture.Â
To this day, their legacy continues to inspire musicians of all nationalities to keep the timeless sounds of Brazilian music alive and well.

Band members Barbara Mantini, Randy Stirtzinger, Rob McBride, Bill Melymuka, and Kevin Lipischak bring together their individual talents to create a beautiful and uplifting musical experience that transports audiences to the beaches of Brazil.
Their passion for Bossa Nova music is evident in every performance they give, striving to honour the legacy created by Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and others, staying true to this unique style, as well as presenting their own take on this music.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Barbara Mantini
Barbara is a powerful and versatile vocal artist, with a professional singing and acting career spanning over 30 years. She is best known as one of the members of Canadaâs premier vocal trio âThe Mantini Sistersâ, who have performed across Canada and the United States in their own productions.
As well as performing at music festivals and concert series as a jazz vocal artist, or classical soprano, Barbara has ventured into a solo cabaret project called âBroadway Divasâ. She has also been a featured soloist with many symphony orchestras.
When not performing, Barbara teaches in the âActing for Film and Television Programâ at Niagara College and at her own private voice studio in Welland.

Randy Stirtzinger has been and still is to this day, a pillar of jazz music in the Niagara community. He has performed all over the region and beyond as a pianist, bass player and vibraphone player. He first discovered his passion for jazz when he heard Oscar Petersonâs âHello Herbieâ album, Herbie Hancockâs âMaiden Voyageâ album and HHâs âHeadhunters albumâ around the of age 16. Since then he has never looked back. His first instrument is the bass guitar and later on came piano, vibes, latin percussion and then upright string bass. Some of his influences include: Milt Jackson, Cal Tjader, Tito, Mongo, Ray Brown, Don Patterson, to name just a few.
Rob McBride is a highly in-demand bassist and bandleader who has been performing in the Toronto jazz scene for the last 25 years, playing at many of the cityâs top jazz venues. While specializing in jazz, Rob is also influenced by solo classical and improvised bass music and has incorporated creative aspects of these elements into his sound through his five-string acoustic bass. Headliner performances includes the TD Niagara Jazz Festival (2014) and the Brampton World of Jazz Festival (2017). Rob has played with some of Canadaâs finest musicians, including Pat LaBarbera, Don Thompson, Ted Warren, Sarah Jerrom, and Adrean Farrugia. He has played with the pit orchestra for the Shaw Festival and the Niagara Symphony Orchestra. Rob has played on many critically-acclaimed albums including recordings by Sarah Jerrom, Beverly Taft, Jeff King, and Barbara Mantini.
After meeting the Stirzinger brothers in 1979, Kevin Lipishak has been playing jazz in the Niagara Region since 1985. His main gig has been as house drummer for Jazz Express Saturday afternoon sessions for the last 36 years and still running. Kevin has also played with all of the local jazz musicians in various groups from trios to big band and latin groups throughout the Niagara Peninsula.
Bill Melymuka
Multi-instrumentalist Bill Melymuka started out playing drums at the young age of 5. Inspired by the legendary Gilke bands of Leutonia, Bill along with his brother Michael, formed a band that was active in the Niagara Region for many years. Ever curious and easily bored, he also tried his hand at trumpet, trombone, saxophone, flute, hand percussion (although not at the same time) and later, clarinet, with interesting results. After becoming aware of, and curious about, other genres of music, Bill became active in the local jazz scene. He has since performed with many local bands, and most interestingly, has played extensively along with musician, educator and prolific recording artist Jamey Aebersold.
