Celebrating International Jazz Day with Latin Jazz

International Jazz Day (April 30) is the world’s largest celebration of jazz. Declared in 2011 by UNESCO, Jazz Day recognizes jazz music as a worldwide major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music.   IJD recognizes jazz as “a means to develop and increase intercultural exchanges and understanding between cultures for the purpose of mutual comprehension and tolerance. …  International Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about the art of jazz, its roots, its future and its impact.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Laura Fernandez

Laura Fernandez was born in Madrid, Spain, spent her childhood in Switzerland and Calgary and is currently based in Toronto, Canada.  She is an award-winning visual artist, pianist, singer-songwriter, and recording artist. Her first CD The Other Side led to a prestigious award at the New York International Independent Music Festival, and performances at Madison Square Garden, the Knitting Factory, and The Bitter End, as well as international festivals. Her Cd Un Solo Beso is a celebration of her Spanish roots and Latin influences and was produced by Juno award-winning producer Billy Bryans. The album features some of Canada’s most vibrant and highly acclaimed musicians with arrangements and performances by Hilario Duran, Roberto Linares Brown, and Luis Mario Ochoa. The CD received extensive airplay in Canada and abroad and has charted in the top 10 across Canadian campuses.  Ok, Alright; a new collection of songs, was released in 2020 during the pandemic and has also achieved international airplay. Laura also spent 5 weeks in India performing with Indian musicians and exploring Indo, Latin, and Jazz fusions and released a CD under the Jazz Goa label.

Don Naduriak

Introduction: Born in rural Saskatchewan, Don Naduriak has become a powerful musical force encompassing a wide range of genres. With extensive experience as a Pianist, Musical Director, Conductor, Composer, and Educator Don is leaving an indelible mark on the music scene.

Early Years: While living in Sturgis, Saskatchewan Don discovered his love for music at an early age and excelled in his musical studies, achieving a Grade 10 Royal Conservatory of Music diploma under the guidance of talented teachers. He began composing during that time.

Musical Education: Don’s journey took a significant turn when he left Saskatchewan at a very young age, moving to Toronto to specifically study and play Jazz at the Advanced School of Contemporary Music. Under the mentorship of legends like Oscar Peterson, Darwyn Aitkin and Ted Moses, he immersed himself in the dynamic world of Jazz, and soon was involved in Toronto’s nascent Latin music scene. Alexander Brown

Alexander Brown is one of Canada’s most renowned trumpet players on the jazz and Latin scene today.
Born into a musical family, Alexander developed a deep passion for music early in his life and began his formal studies at the age of ten. He then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in classical music at the acclaimed University of Arts of Cuba/ Instituto Superior de Arte.  Read more…
