ABOUT THE SHOW:
MOSAIC is the eponymous debut release from a new jazz quartet performing a program of original compositions recorded ‘live’ at two concerts in Germany. The album is co-produced by veteran Toronto drummer Terry Clarke and German vibraharpist Stefan Bauer, and MOSAIC will launch it via shows at Toronto’s Jazz Bistro (Oct. 4 and 5), right here in Niagara @ The Hare Winery (Oct. 7), Hirut in Toronto (Oct. 8) and The Jazz Room in Kitchener/Waterloo (Nov. 6).

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Terry Clarke
Terry Clarke was born in 1944, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He began displaying rhythmic aptitude at a very early age and was just 12 years old when he began studying formally with noted drum teacher and author, Jim Blackley, Blackley was, and remains, a primary figure in Clarke’s continuing development as a musician.
In 1965, Clarke moved to San Francisco to work with the legendary saxophonist, John Handy III. He performed with Handy for the next two and a half years, during which time the Grammy nominated recording, Live at The Monterey Jazz Festival (Columbia-1966) was made. Following the John Handy experience (which included Terry’s long-time musical collaborator and friend, Don Thompson), Clarke began building his reputation for versatility by joining the world-famous pop vocal group, “The Fifth Dimension” at the height of their popularity, traveling and performed extensively with them throughout the U.S.A., Canada, and Europe.
Stefan Bauer
Stefan Bauer is active as a vibraphone/marimba player and as a composer in a wide field between tradition and avant-garde. He grew up in Recklinghausen/Germany playing classical piano from age five, and as of age fifteen, he became part of local jazz-fusion bands also playing trombone which he eventually studied at the masters level at Hochschule für Musik Detmold/Dortmund.
In 1976 he started playing vibes on his own and quickly connected with musicians in the Ruhr Area, especially with musicians of “Trademark” (Matthias Nadolny – ts, Wolfgang Jungekrüger – p, Bodo Klingelhöfer – b and Michael Peters – dr) as well as Tyree Glenn junior and multi-instrumentalist Helge Schneider.
In 1977 he met vibraphonist David Friedman whose encouraging mentorship and invitation for a brief stay in New York had great motivational impact.
Matthew Halpin
Dublin-born saxophonist and composer Matthew Halpin is currently based in Vienna, Austria, and has been appointed professor for jazz saxophone at Music and Arts Private University of Vienna. Aside from his pedagogical activities at the university and having taught masterclasses around Europe, USA, Asia and Central America, he works with various ensembles from Ireland, Germany and Austria and tours internationally as a saxophonist. Matthew often leads projects under his own name and and co-leads several bands, as well as being a sideman. He has also worked with larger ensembles such as the NDR Bigband, WDR Bigband, RTE National Concert Orchestra, Subway Jazz Orchestra, and the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra.
