John Neudorf was born in St. Catharines, Ontario on September 15, 1967 into a musical family. His three brothers were musicians, interested in rock and country. John, however, was captivated by the rhythmic sensibilities of jazz, being influenced by such greats as Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Miles Davis, Chet Baker and Ella Fitzgerald. Consequently, post secondary studies took John to Mohawk College where he studied jazz, first as a drummer and then later shifting his focus to vocals.
John’s first vocal instructor, Rosemary Burns, channeled his ability and inspired him to pursue a jazz career. He next studied with “Down Beat” jazz vocalist of the year, Mark Murphy who described John “as one of the most promising young male jazz singers in the business.”
Initially John fronted bands with classic blues players such as Mel Brown, and Matt “Guitar” Murphy. Simultaneously he began to learn the jazz song book and performed with local players throughout the Niagara Region. As his career took off, he went on to perform at some of Toronto’s most prestigious jazz clubs notably, “The Montreal Bistro” and “The Top of the Senator” with the Mark Eisenman Trio, Don Thompson, Reg Swagger, Kevin Turcott.
John’s musical credits include national radio commercials such as the “Breakfast for Dinner” egg campaign and the “First Choice Hair According to You” jingle. His Indie album “I remember” garnered such praise as “youthful and full of energy”, “the ease with which he scats is exactly that” and there is “joy in the enjoyment of the rhythm of all participating.”
John’s style is one of meticulous phrasing and vocal percussion overlaid with a pure, smoky rich timbre. His sincere delivery touches the listener with the purity of the message in each song he performs.
With his extensive blues background combined with explosive scat and warm phrasing, John Neudorf is a must see.
